Summary

Organizations need self-directed, flexible, and innovative employees. Only in this way can they play a significant role in our rapidly changing society, both now and in the future. This requires employees who engage in ‘lifelong learning’ and approach their development process differently. The current education and training offerings do not adequately provide for this. Therefore, employees will have to seek opportunities to improve in their work themselves, within their own (work) environment. This is called ‘self-directed learning’. There are many digital media to learn in a self-directed manner, anytime and anywhere, but these are not yet sufficiently used in this way. This calls for sustainable learning solutions that are not only aimed at acquiring knowledge or skills but also at supporting the competencies that make people self-directed and flexible. Sustainable learning solutions arise from an integrated approach in which three pillars play a role: the learning employee, the organization, and technological learning solutions. In this chapter, we delve deeper into these three pillars and how they can contribute to sustainable learning with the aim of innovation-oriented employees.
