About Nicolet's music
Little by little, highlights of Nicolet Theunissen’s musical career will appear in blog form:
Biography
Nicolet Theunissen (1964) comes from a musical family, where singing together and learning to play an instrument (classical piano) were part of her upbringing. From a young age, she wrote her own songs and at school, she seized every opportunity to take the stage. She took singing lessons and mastered classical vocal techniques but always with a pop/jazz application in mind.
Nicolet was part of A Modest Proposal (1983-1993), a new wave electronic pop band that was ahead of its time. The LP and CD released by the band in the 80s and 90s are considered collector’s items among alternative new wave enthusiasts. Nicolet’s versatility is evident from performances for Radio 4 by A Modest Proposal with Steven Brown (Tuxedomoon). Or her collaboration with percussionist Nippy Noya and opera singer Marco Bakker during the presentation of the A Modest Proposal CD ‘Contrast’. In between, Nicolet regularly performed as a guest singer in various jazz formations, both in the parties-and-events circuit and during jazz festivals where she performed with double bassist Tjitze Vogel.
In addition to her career as a social scientist, she started the electronic pop group BiNT in 2001 with, among others, Ton van Dort (Cirque du Soleil) and Bert van de Grift (A Modest Proposal, Human Beings), which earned them a place in the National Music Encyclopedia. In 2005, keyboardist/producer and musical partner Bert van de Grift suddenly passed away, which immediately marked the end of BiNT. From 2008, she further developed herself as a producer and composer under the name Catharina 2.0 and performed sporadically, in addition to her work as an entrepreneur with Future Life Research. It was not until 2018, after meeting DirkJan during a jam session, that Nicolet resumed her career as a live musician. Or, as she herself says: “Taking the stage as part of Sound of Balance feels like coming home.”
Unfortunately, Corona threw a wrench in the works and performances were halted. After the pandemic, Dirkjan left Sound of Balance to focus on other musical projects. Drummer/Percussionist Ton van Dort (formerly of BiNT) joined, and under the name SoB2, they experimented with new combinations of electronic pop and live music. Due to physical challenges, it was decided to pause the experiment indefinitely. Nicolet resumed her work as Catharina 2.0 and keeps the flame alive.
